RELATIVE DENTIN ABRASIVITY (RDA) TESTING Services

Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) on dental products

Quantitative Abrasivity and Wear Testing Solutions

  • Enamel Fluoride Uptake (EFU) : We test the amount of fluoride absorbed by enamel from fluoride-containing dental hygiene products.
  • Enamel Solubility Reduction (ESR): In addition to ISO11609 Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) test, we also test effectiveness of fluoride treatments in reducing enamel solubility in acidic environments.
  • Total and Soluble Fluoride Tests : We test and quantify the total fluoride content and the amount of soluble fluoride in dental products to ensure optimal efficacy. We also test effect of fluoride loss comparing it to enamel abrasion hardness values.
  • In Vitro color stability tests : Spectrophotometer tests designed to assess the stain-removal and whitening efficiency of dental care products.

On-premise Specimen Handling

Specimen Preparation Facility Services

  • Custom enamel and dentin specimens derived from human and bovine sources. Our in-house processing lab ensures precise specimen preparation for research studies and sponsor-driven testing requirements.
  • Using our on-site processing lab, we perform precise drilling, cutting, mounting, and polishing to prepare specimens for in-house studies and on-demand supply to sponsors for independent testing on dental hygiene products.

Dental Hygiene Products RDA Testing Solutions

Tooth morphology under SEM for Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) scoring

Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) test methods

  • Enamel Abrasivity Testing: Determines abrasiveness on enamel, complementing ISO11609 RDA results for a full understanding of product safety.
  • Surface Profilometry: Measures changes in Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) values with surface roughness of dentin or enamel after exposure to your dental hygiene products.
  • Silica Abrasive Index (SAI): Evaluates the abrasiveness of silica-based toothpaste formulations and  dental hygiene products.
  • Acid Erosion Testing: Simulates acidic challenges from everyday diets and evaluates the protective role of toothpaste.
  • Microhardness Testing: Assesses the effect of toothpaste on the enamel abrasion hardness change.
  • Dentinal Tubule Occlusion Testing: Tests for sensitivity relief by measuring the ability of a product to block exposed dentinal tubules.

Methods of Detection

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

  • Surface Morphology Analysis: Visualizes microscopic abrasions, scratches, and material loss and calculate  Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) scoring.
  • Abrasive Particle Interaction: Examines how toothpaste abrasives interact with the dentin surface.
  • Combined with EDS: Identifies compositional changes, such as mineral loss or fluoride deposition on the surface

 Laser Optical Profilometry

  • 3D Surface Mapping: Creates a detailed 3D representation of the dentin surface to quantify wear depth and roughness on dental hygiene products.
  • Non-Contact Measurement: Ensures accuracy without causing additional damage to your dental hygiene products.
  • Pre- and Post-Test Comparisons: Monitors how abrasivity varies with different brushing forces and toothpaste formulations.

 Hardness Testing

  • Microhardness Measurement: Evaluates the protective or weakening effects of toothpaste on dentin and  enamel abrasion hardness efficacy.
  • Localized Testing: Focuses on specific regions of the dentin affected by brushing.
  • Combined with Acid Erosion: Measures hardness after acidic challenges to evaluate product efficacy under real-world conditions.
